The iPad hype

So if you haven’t heard of the iPad you’ve been hiding in a cave for the past year. It is one of the most hyped pieces of technology out there. The Apple iPad is the tablet version of their iPhone product.
The great thing about what Apple has done is they’ve revolutionised the tablet as they have done the mobile phone. They have made the user interface simple and crisp. They’ve also made the product affordable compared to the tablet pc market prior to its launch.
I managed to have a play with a WiFi only iPad this week (thanks to Tai). With all the hype around this device I was very sceptical to the point that I was sure I would never buy one. As soon as I had finished with my first test run, I wanted one.
With a large crisp screen and great touch interface that we’ve all come to love on the iPhone it was a great experience. I was able to play some games, read an electronic Book (eBook) and even watch one of the TED conference talks on the device.
The keyboard isn’t too bad although touch typing is out of the question without the tactile effect of actual buttons. But you can use a Bluetooth keyboard as an accessory and type away on that if you’re that way inclined.
It is definitely a great device to sit on the couch (or anywhere in the house) and surf the internet, read your eBook or watch videos on. It also shows potential for specific corporate roles that are showing customer’s videos, images or PowerPoint’s.
However at the price of $1499 it’s just a little too expensive when compared to the great deals that you can get on Netbook’s (approximately $499 – $999), which are in essence a mini laptop and they allow you to do so much more. Compared with functionality and price the Netbook will win all the time but the iPad has the style factor along with the hype. So if you can afford to get yourself one then you’ll be the envy of any party.
